Mazda Bongo Specifications: Mazda introduced Mazda Bongo and Ford Freda models in 1995. Initially these models were intended for JDM – Japan Domestic Market. These luxury people carriers were equipped with factory fitted camper roof, branded as Auto Free Top. Mazda supplied the campers with 2.5L Turbo Diesel and V6 Petrol engines. It’s worth noting that automatic that 4-speed automatic transmissions went fully electronic in 2001.
Mazda Bongo Top Speed
The real world Top Speed is 115 mph. Going above that is not safe. The Bongo safe maximum cruising speed is 90 mph, more than that and it becomes unsettled.

To adapt to other markets, Mazda re-branded Bongo Friendee camper as the Ford Freda. Ford Freda even have a Ford VIN plate. Basically Mazda Bongo Friendee and Ford Freda are the same vehicles. The only small differences are:
- Front grille
- Wheel trims and
- Interior trim cloth patterns
- Obviously the steering wheel bosses were branded by vehicle.
